Shama Mohamed Under Fire for Body-Shaming Rohit Sharma as ‘Unimpressive’ and ‘Fat’

Fans, enraged by her comments, took to social media to defend Rohit, drawing comparisons between Congress and Rohit’s leadership.

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed has landed in controversy over her remarks on Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma in which she allegedly fat-shamed him and criticized his leadership.

In a now-deleted post on X, she wrote, “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Needs to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive captain India has ever had!” She later defended her statement claiming it was not body-shaming but merely an opinion on his fitness and captaincy. She also called Rohit Sharma a “mediocre player” and “lucky to be captain” in a previous post.

“It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason,” Mohamed said. She further added, “When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It is a democracy.”

Fans commented on her botox filled face in response to her commenting on Rohit Sharma. Stating, “Imagine using botox on lips and face to look young and commenting on the fitness of Rohit Sharma.”

Congress swiftly distanced itself from Mohamed’s remarks, with party communications head Pawan Khera stating, “Dr. Shama Mohamed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party’s position. She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future.”

Congress MP Rajani Patil also condemned the remarks, saying, “I personally and the party also will not approve of body-shaming anyone. Talking this way about a sportsperson who represents the country is not right. The party will seek a response from her on this.”

Fans, enraged by her comments, took to social media to defend Rohit, drawing comparisons between Congress and Rohit’s leadership. Many argued that Rohit had done more for India than former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, ridiculing Mohamed’s criticism.
