Myanmar Devastated by Strong Earthquake as Death Toll Rising & Buildings Collapses – Tremors Felt Across India

India has offered assistance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi extending condolences.

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday March 28th with tremors felt in Thailand, India and China’s Yunnan province. The quake which hit around 12:50 pm local time had its epicenter in Mandalay and caused significant destruction including the collapse of a 30 storey government building in Bangkok trapping 81 people. Thailand’s defense minister confirmed three deaths and 90 missing.

In Myanmar, three people have died so far when a mosque partially collapsed and the count is expected to rise. Roads buckled in the capital Naypyidaw and a major hospital there has been declared a “mass casualty area” with rows of injured people being treated outside. Myanmar’s ruling junta declared a state of emergency in six regions and made a rare appeal for international humanitarian aid indicating a large-scale disaster.

Mild tremors were reported in Kolkata and Imphal causing panic but no major damage. India has offered assistance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi extending condolences. Buildings were damaged across Myanmar including at the National Museum in Naypyidaw where ceilings collapsed and staff fled in fear. An aftershock of 6.4 magnitude followed 11 minutes later.
