Pratul Mukhopadhyay: Remembering the unsung hero of Bengali Folk Music

Pratul Mukhopadhyay is a renowned Bengali singer, lyricist who has left a legacy in Bengali folk music. He has been honoured with the prestigious award ‘Banga Bibhushan Award’

India’s one of the richest and the deeply rooted folk music Bengal reflects the social and spiritual life of people in Bengal. It has evolved timely over the centuries and blends its influences from Bhakthi, sufi, and Baul traditions. In such vibrant music, the legendary Pratul Mukhopadhyay left a legacy behind in his long lasting musical career. 

Early Days into the musical journey!

Pratul was born in 1942 at Barisal which is now part of Bangladesh and shifted to West Bengal in 1947. The spark of his love towards literature, music began at the age of twelve and his father instilled in him a deep appreciation for music. Initially, he transformed a poem which was written by Mangalacharan Chattopadhyay into a song. It became constant in his later days and emerged as a prolific songwriter, composer, and singer anchored in Bengali traditions deeply.

His music addressed pressing social issues, resonating with the masses and reflecting with the milieu of his times. He is widely known for performing without instrumental accompaniment, relying completely on his voice to convey powerful messages.

According to the upcoming breaking news, the well-acclaimed Bengali singer & songwriter, Pratul (82) took his last breath on Saturday, Feb 15,2025. He had been suffering from a prolonged illness which is not briefed officially and it caused him to die. He is considered to be an “Unsung Hero of Bengali Music” because he always remained away from the commercial spotlight and mainstream recognition amidst his immense contribution.
