On March 22, 2025 Karnataka will hold a state wide bandh called by pro-Kannada organizations to oppose the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill and increasing violence in the Belagavi region. There are mixed responses from different sectors on the proposed bandh which is being proposed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Although exams for the lower classes would continue in schools, significant disruptions to the transport system are anticipated. Protests were triggered by an attack on a NWKRTC bus conductor in Belagavi who was assaulted for not speaking Marathi.
Auto rickshaws which includes the union of over 20,000 auto rickshaw drivers will also participate in the bandh. Ola and Uber drivers are also lending their full support to the protests arguing that they are losing their livelihood to bike taxis and to outsiders who dominate the local economy.
Bus services operated by the state such as the KSRTC remain in doubt, a meeting about public convenience is to happen. Various pro-Kannada organizations such as the Kannada Rakshana Vedike, distanced themselves from the bandh and said protests hurt daily life instead.
