In 2016, a recruitment drive took place by the WBSSC (West Bengal Staff Selection Commission) for appointing the staffs in state-run and state-aided schools in West Bengal. As per the given information, the vacancy for the positions at various regions has been recorded as 24,640 and at the end of the recruitment the commission appointed 25,753. Controversies began stating that all those appointments are rigged and questions & speculations raised for giving offer letters above the available vacancies, and OMR tampering.

The petitions of the affected candidates were taken to the Calcutta High Court, in 2021 the HC bench led by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay took up the case. And the investigations revealed there was manipulation in the merit lists, exchange of bribe, OMR tampering and rank jumping took place for appointing their favoured candidates. It is followed by the probe led by CBI under the instruction of Calcutta High Court. This massive scam received huge attention among the people and the media. In 2024, Calcutta High Court declared their verdict of cancelling the appointments of 25,753 staff and ordered a fresh recruitment process for the candidates who were affected. Also, they directed the CBI to continue their investigation. The newly appointed staff went to the Supreme Court and demanded justice.
On 3 April 2025, SC panel of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna और Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar issued the final verdict by upholding the decision of Calcutta High Court and declared that the recruitment process had been vitiated by manipulation and fraudility. Further, they ordered the West Bengal government to conduct a fresh recruitment process to fill the vacancies within three months, assuring the credibility and transparency of the process.
“In our opinion, this is the case where the entire selection process is vitiated and tainted beyond resolution. Manipulation and fraud on a large scale, coupled with the intention to cover up have tainted the selection process beyond repair” – Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
