Minister of Maharashtra Dhananjay Munde has resigned after the arrest of his close aide Walmik Karad in connection with the murder of a Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh from Beed district. The option was considered after CM Devendra Fadnavis ordered Munde to vacate the post fearing political backlash will erupt. His resignation was sent and accepted and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also held discussions. 

What is the Beed Sarpanch Murder Case?

In December 2024, Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village was killed in a gruesome act. Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh was brutally killed by hanging to a vehicle and dragging for several kms. The first and main accused is a close aide of NCP minister Dhanjay Munde who is Walmik Karad urinated over him, laughed and shot videos of their inhuman act. 

The circulating pictures and videos showing the alleged murder have only incensed the people further. A close aide of Munde Walmik Karad was arrested in participation in the crime.

They expected a thorough cleaning of the place and burning of the sarpanch’s body. Resignation from Munde has led the district on high alert. Meanwhile, the budget session of Maharashtra is under way and on March 10th Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is due to present the budget. The political fallout of the case remains uncertain but it has already led to a major shake-up in the state administration.
