Gujarat’s Bharthana becomes India’s Most Profitable Toll Plaza- Here’s Why

The Bharthana toll plaza in Gujarat is the leading toll collector in India, generating INR 400 crore every year, primarily due to very heavy commercial traffic on NH-48.

Bharthana, a Gujarat village has India’s top revenue earning toll plaza. Located on the Vadodara-Bharuch section of National Highway 48 (NH-48), this toll plaza has been consistently producing an annual revenue of around INR 400 crore for the last five years.

This huge revenue is fueled by the large number of goods carrying vehicles plying the congested Delhi-Mumbai corridor, which is an important trade route linking northern landlocked states to western seaports. After Bharthana, the Shahjahanpur toll plaza in Rajasthan also on NH-48 takes the second highest revenue, earning  INR 378 crore per year.

Based on information provided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 14 out of 1,063 toll plazas in India recorded collections above INR 200 crore a year. FASTAG has gone a long way in reducing revenue leakages and making the process of collecting tolls efficient. National toll collection has come close to doubling from INR 27,504 crore in 2019-2020 to INR 55,882 crore in the previous financial year.

Even with the increasing revenue from tolls, it is still just a small part of the government’s highway development and maintenance expenditure. With 45,000 km of India’s 1.5 lakh km national highway network coming under tolling, officials are looking at further scaling up toll operations.
